Dalton Township settles Justice Department lawsuit over Fair Housing Act

The township must pay $62,500 to settle a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Justice Department alleging it discriminated against a group home serving recovering drug and alcohol users, according to the Justice Department.

Dalton Township must pay $7,500 to the United States as a civil penalty and $55,000 to Joel Kruszynski, the owner of Serenity Shores, 3071 Second, in Twin Lake, the Justice Department says.

“The Fair Housing Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act ensure that persons with disabilities, including those recovering from addiction, can live in a community of their choosing free from discrimination,” said Thomas E. Perez, Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division.
