Complaint targets Waukesha County, WI

The Metropolitan Milwaukee Fair Housing Council is asking a federal agency to force Waukesha County officials to update housing plans and do more to promote racial integration.

The council filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development alleging Waukesha County violates federal laws regulating use of Community Development Block Grant and HOME Investment Partnership money. The county receives $2.5 million annually through the programs and distributes the money to municipalities for housing programs and projects.

The complaint criticizes local zoning regulations that set minimum requirements for housing lot sizes, restricting development of affordable housing and making it “virtually impossible for many low income and minority people to move to the suburbs.”
