Proposed Newhall CA housing sparks opposition

Residents of a Newhall townhouse community are in an uproar over a 30-unit, low-income apartment complex proposed next door to them.

The city bought the former park-and-ride lot, located at 23610 Newhall Ave. south of Valle del Oro, for an affordable housing project.

The Santa Clarita Planning Commission unanimously approved the project, which was proposed by housing developer The Related Cos., during its meeting Tuesday night. The four-building complex will help Santa Clarita reach low-income-housing goals set by the state.

Some residents of the Oak Creek townhouse community next door worry that the complex will attract a bad element to the neighborhood, take away parking spaces available to them and add a complex with large, dominating buildings that will overwhelm the neighborhood.
