Westchester given new deadline to comply with fair housing order | The Journal News | LoHud.com | LoHud.com

Despite a court ruling against the county, Westchester County officials have asked for more time before taking action on legislation that would prohibit discrimination against renters who use Section 8 or other government income to pay rent. But a judge set a new deadline today for the county to report how it will move the legislation ahead.

The item is one of many elements the county agreed to address three years ago today in a 2009 fair housing settlement. The settlement, which ended a lawsuit arguing the county hadn’t done enough to break down housing discrimination, requires the county to build 750 affordable units in mostly-white communities and take other steps to promote non-discriminatory housing.
